| George would be bummed. |
Early last week I found out I owe more tax than I had originally thought. WAY more. This, of course, is not good and Mary is (understandably) on a tear. I'm being (rightfully) reigned in. One of the things that will not make the final cut of our financial inquisition is the coach. As a result I'll be self coaching myself through Oceanside and Coeur d'Alene. Although nixing the coach is the correct decision globally, my micro world of triathlon is being turned upside down. I'm not really knowledgeable enough to do this on my own. Sure, I've helped a few people here and there through the coachme.com site. But this "help" was much more basic and geared towards athletes who wanted to finish their first sprint triathlon. My needs are a bit more complex - I'd like to finish Oceanside with a respectable time and I want to finish Coeur d'Alene standing up and alive.
Disappointed? Yes. Dettered? No. The circumstances are what the are and there's nothing I can do about it except move forward. I'm currently 24 weeks out from Oceanside and 36 weeks out from Couer d'Alene. Tomorrow I leave for New York City for the week. Though I won't be able to get that much training in past a couple of morning runs in Central Park and a couple of evening gym sessions, I will have time to do the research and select the plan I will use to self coach. And when I get back it will be go time.
I've reviewed a couple of 36 week Ironman plans already. I'll spend this week drilling down on each and then pick one, slim it down by a week to start on October 24th and then figure out how to best modify it to execute for Oceanside. I'm not concerned about missing the week, I wasn't going to start with the coach until November 1st anyway. What I am concerned about is building Oceanside into the plan. Like I said, my knowledge and experience has it's limits. But people have race schedules like this all the time and I'm sure with enough research I will find an answer that works.

| Coeur d'Alene Swim Start |
So that's the news - I'll be formally starting Ironman training in a week, but I'll be doing it solo.

That's a bummer... but being married to a self-employed extension-filer myself and the surprises that can entail, I totally understand. It might make sense (though you've probably already thought of this) to make a combo meal deal out of the plans you're considering. And to keep all of the full plans within easy reach. I'll bet that as you go along, you'll find certain pieces of certain ones make more sense for you. You're such a master of research and info-gathering, you will no doubt come up with something that works great.
ReplyDeleteGood luck. Oh, and if you ever need an experienced spectator...
I love training peaks, but can't compare it to BT.com as I've never used that.
ReplyDeleteI can help you with what the swim, bike and run are like for Oceanside and you can find the training plan to fit that scenario.
running in CP! thats always awesome
ReplyDeleteyoull be great doing the plan on your own and should be able to mix in Oceanside just fine - great call on the binder!
I always file early, but also always get a refund so there is no reason to wait! Considering your base, I'm sure any training plan you pick will have you ready.
ReplyDeleteLike you said, there are so many programs out there and you'll be able to find one that fits the bill for you. You have enough experience under your belt to make this work.
ReplyDeleteSucks about the coach. Sucks even more about the taxes. I am an April 15th submitter myself but it is done more out of spite then procrastination!
ReplyDeleteIf you need help with the training plans shoot me an email. I have a couple of good ones.
Kevin, Derrick, and I all used the Matt Fitzgerald Level7 plan if you want to take a look at that one.
Have trained for my two IMs solo-with written plans only and was successful (to a point)- so yeah. It can be done. Triathlon is not a team sport and doing things without that team mentality only makes one stronger. Sorry to hear about the tax b.s. Damn IRS always seems to go after those of us who are just trying to make a living and get a little fun out of what me make on the side. Chin up!
ReplyDeleteCan't help you with the plan or the taxes! Good luck I bet you will do fine!
ReplyDeleteboo taxes...that happened to us one year and I was furious with my husband...I did forgive him but it took a few days..I know he felt horrible. I wish you all the best with your training! You can do this! Believe!
ReplyDeleteNot getting to have a coach is inconvenient but you have tremendous drive to follow a plan. Couple that with Jeff sharing the plan and holding you accountable, you will do great.
ReplyDeleteThere is a wealth of information about IM training plans. It may seem like everyone is coached, but truth is... many of us take all of the plans we find online, and make them work for us. You will be fine!!! :) Best of luck! Can't wait to follow your journey!
ReplyDeleteBut I thought being self employed was supposed to be a benefit?
ReplyDeleteSorry to hear about the taxes :P
ReplyDeleteTaxes, bleh! You are one head-strong, smart, and determined individual...I know you can do the training!
